What is Strah u Ulici Lipa?

Strah u Ulici Lipa is a children's novel written by Milivoj Matošec, a Croatian writer and journalist who was born in 1920 and died in 1999. The novel was first published in 1968 and has since been reprinted several times. It is considered one of the best Croatian children's novels of the 20th century and has won several awards, including the Grigor Vitez Award and the Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić Award.

The novel is set in a small and peaceful street called Linden Street (Ulica lipa) in an unnamed Croatian city. The street is named after the linden trees that used to grow there, but have since disappeared. The street is home to a group of friendly and curious children who like to play and explore together. They are Praporac (Flag), Veslonožac (Paddle-legs), Latica (Petal), Cvrkutalo (Chirper), Šapica (Paw) and Suzica (Tear). They often hang out on the fence of a ruined house that belonged to Alkibijad Kolotrka, a former city senator whose statue stands in front of the house. The house has a mysterious basement that the children are afraid to enter.

One day, a new boy moves into Linden Street. His name is Mungos (Mongoos) and he is very different from the other children. He is rude, arrogant, aggressive and secretive. He claims to be a master of martial arts and magic, and he often threatens and bullies the other children. He also seems to have a special interest in the basement of Alkibijad's house. The children soon discover that Mungos is hiding a dark secret that involves his past and his family. They also find out that there is something strange and dangerous lurking in the basement. Together, they have to face their fears and uncover the truth behind Mungos and the basement.
